I have been using this recipe since before my kids were born, and from the time they could reach the counter to make these cookies themselves, they have been using it too. We occasionally try new cookie recipes, but always end up coming back to this one. My kids asked me to post it for them to look up while they are away at college.

Group I
1 cup butter (2 sticks)
1 cup white sugar
1 cup brown sugar
Group II
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla
Group III
2 cups all purpose white flour
2 cups ground oatmeal*
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
Group IV
2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
1 8 ounce Hershey’s chocolate bar, grated (optional)
* Old fashioned non-instant oats, ground in a food processor or blender
Instructions
1. Combine Group I ingredients in a bowl and mix with an electric mixer
2. Add Group II ingredients
3. In a separate bowl, mix together Group III ingredients*
4. Pour the Group III mixture into Group II ingredients and mix until combined
5. Mix in Group IV ingredients
6. Place balls of cookie dough onto baking sheet with a spoon or an ice cream scoop
7. Bake in a pre-heated 375° oven for about 12 minutes
* Or in the same bowl as the butter, sugar, egg mixture, mixing it off to the side so as to mix the dry ingredients together before mixing it in with the sugar, butter, egg mixture
Notes
You can also add a cup of your favorite nuts, such as walnuts or pecans, chopped into small pieces.
